Prospective students who are interested in enrolling in the Bachelor of Professional Studies program, but missed the July 1 application deadline, may be interested to learn of the new “Express Start” dates offered by the School of Professional Studies (SPS).

The College of Charleston offers numerous courses in the seven-week express format, with many courses offered with either online or hybrid options. The SPS recently made a concerted effort to develop further courses in the express format, now offering more accelerated courses than any other CofC department.
“We had some students who, for various reasons, had to drop a class or classes,” explains Ashley Riser, Associate Director of Admissions in the SPS. “We realized that if we had had more courses in the express format, those students could have at least finished a course or could pick up something in the next express term.”

The School of Professional Studies administrators then determined that they could also offer an additional opportunity for students to apply to the degree completion program.  Rather than only allowing students to enroll at the beginning of each semester, the department now allows students to enroll at the beginning of each express term start date.  The Express Start dates for the 2016-17 academic year are August 23rd, October 12, January 11, and March 3.   Application deadlines may be found on the SPS website.

Not all course requirements for the Bachelor of Professional Studies degree are offered in express format: certain foundational and capstone courses cannot be completed within an accelerated timeline, and must adhere to a traditional semester format. However, the express format provides helpful options for students who are looking to begin the degree program mid-semester, or who would like the option of taking a full course load, without having to focus on all courses simultaneously.

Students who have previously taken the express format courses have been particularly pleased with the courses offered in the hybrid format. The combination of online course materials with weekly face-to-face sessions, provides the needed scheduling flexibility along with the personal interaction of a traditional course format.

The following courses will be offered in the express format this Fall*:
