laptop-hands.jpgSummer has arrived, and along with it, a time when many choose to take a break from their academic or professional lives. Yet opportunities exist to further one’s career, while still maintaining the relaxed pace of the summer months.

The College of Charleston Center for Continuing and Professional (CCPE) offers over 250 individual non-credit courses, many of which target highly sought-after skills, applicable across a wide range of industries. The instructor-led courses are all held exclusively online,
and allow students to move at their own pace - an ideal scenario for summertime learning!

While all of the courses are economically priced, the CCPE is offering a discount on select courses for the months of June*, July and August.

Quick and Convenient

Participation in the CCPE’s online courses requires only basic software and equipment. Students need only a computer or tablet with internet access, an e-mail address, and a compatible web browser with Adobe Flash and PDF plug-ins (Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox browsers are recommended - most courses are also compatible with Macintosh Safari).

The course materials generally take the form of text-based instruction - with new lessons posted on Wednesdays and Fridays - but may also include illustrations, audio files, or other supplementary materials. Students can freely access these materials at any time throughout the duration of the course period, and lessons can be saved in printer-friendly formats - perfect for pool-side reading! Although students may work through the course at their leisure, it is strongly advised that students complete each lesson within two weeks of the release.

Each lesson is accompanied by an assignment designed to solidify new concepts and skills. While these assignments are self-evaluating (and optional), students can solicit feedback from the instructor in the interactive discussion area for that particular course. For further self-evaluation, students are asked to complete a multiple-choice quiz at the end of each lesson.

All of the CCPE’s online courses are six weeks in duration - with a possibility of a 10 day extension - and can generally be completed in 24 hours. Once all lessons in a given course session have been released, a final exam is made available. This exam tests a student’s comprehension of the course material, and is required in order to receive a certificate of completion.

Diverse and Relevant

The non-credit courses offered through the CCPE run the gamut from low-fat cooking to database programming. Some courses are designed for personal enrichment, while others are intended to provide career-level knowledge and training. Prospective students will also find test prep for the SAT and GRE exams.

When determining the catalog for their online courses, the CCPE looked at current industry trends, as well as skill-gaps often found in the workplace. The career-oriented courses all provide instruction in areas that are relevant - if not strongly desired - in the modern workforce, and many of the courses also cover subject areas not typically addressed in credit-based programs, such as training in Microsoft Office suite.

Several of the courses, including those in Project Management and Teaching ESL, can also be applied toward professional certification (PMI and TESOL respectively), and all students will receive a certificate from the CofC upon course completion. Students who choose one of the JobBridge program’s online certificate options will receive a also receive a certificate in that subject area.

Economical

All of the online course offered through the CCPE are priced at a very reasonable $119. Popular courses in particular subject areas have also been bundled to maximize student savings.

Now through August 17th, the CCPE is extending a promotional rate for 5 different career-oriented courses.  The following courses are currently priced at $99:
